I’m Not Made for Winter!

When did I begin to love Summer more than Winter? When? But, the fact is that I now long for warmer weather as I shiver in the coldness of this day. My fingers and toes are numb. In fact my fingers don’t glide across the keyboard as quickly and the socks on my toes aren’t doing their job. I’m suffering, don’t  you see?

The garden needs me. It is too too cold out there. So the remaining corn stalks will have to wait to be chopped down. They are standing tall against the panhandle winds, not bowing, not bending. I’m so proud of them!

Shallowater, Texas is being hit by our first (of many, to be sure) cold fronts to affront us.

The men at the local donuts shop are talking about the weather instead of solving the worlds problems. I know this because Royce tells me this is true. And like my granny he never lies.

The lovely Lambs Ear I planted around the flap pole, the Hens & Chicks and other succulents, the Asparagus Ferns remain outside weathering the cold. They seem to be fine but I worry about them.

The greenhouse is filled with a variety of plants (potted up herbs and hanging baskets of flora, etc.) which were taken from the porch to a warmer and more suitable place to winter.

I’ll wait for Spring —- then Summer to thaw out. But, it looks like a long long Fall and Winter before I do.

Garden Cages in the Snow

Garden Cages in the Snow

It snowed here in Huber, actually it is still snowing. Mounds of snow on the ground where a thriving garden once stood, now the dry branches of some flower stalks I was waiting to harvest are spoiled for the harvest but make a rather interesting site with the drifts of snow all around then, not to mention the vegetable cages and shovel left in the ground! Remind me not to get ill again next year when the garden is spent and needs tending to — to winter it.  It’s wintered now!! Or not, as the case may be so we’ll see how the spring planting goes this year….if I have an abundance of bugs I’ll know who to point the finger at …. won’t I? Should have drug myself right out of that bed and readied the garden for winter! By the way, that blue and pink balloon looking thing on the right of this snapshot is actually a snow buried  garden windmill (to keep the birds away) also left in the garden like the shovel.  We got (and are still getting) lots of snow in Huber 😉

The Sting of the Cold

I can only imagine how the sting of the cold feels for our neighbors in the mid-west. Just the thought of fighting a blizzard to get to the warmth of home makes me cringe. I’ve been in a blizzard (more than one, actually) and let me tell you it can be frightful and a daunting task to get home. You freeze to deep inside your bones even if bundled up layers thick. The cold wind is unforgiving. You do not go out in it unless you absolutely have no option! And the roads can be tremendous evil even with proper tires. Best to stay in and play board games and put puzzles together until it passes.

Still, my thoughts are with the folks to the north of us and with my daughter in Ohio who during the next few days will share in all the wintry fun before this storm is over. I hope she and her family fairs well and that all the puzzle pieces are in the box for I know this is one thing they will be doing to pass the time. I look forward to all the pictures she’ll post of their winter wonderland outside her sun-porch window.

Of course, being a writer I have a winter wonderland story of my own to share. I always have a story. I’ll polish it up and post it tomorrow.
